Understanding AGRSS: Why Certification Matters for Glass Shops
AGRSS — the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard — is the industry benchmark for safe windshield and auto glass installation. For glass shops working with TPAs and insurance carriers, AGRSS compliance is not just a best practice — it is increasingly a requirement.
The AGRSS standard was developed by the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) and covers the entire installation process: technician training, adhesive selection and application, safe drive-away times, and quality inspection procedures.
Why carriers care about AGRSS. An improperly installed windshield is a safety hazard. The windshield contributes to the structural integrity of the vehicle, airbag deployment effectiveness, and occupant protection in a rollover. Carriers that allow non-compliant installations face liability exposure.
What AGRSS compliance requires. Shops must document their installation procedures, ensure technicians are trained and follow the written standard, use adhesives per manufacturer specifications, and perform quality inspections on completed work.
The AGSC registration program. Shops can register with the Auto Glass Safety Council to demonstrate their commitment to the AGRSS standard. Registration involves a self-certification process and optional third-party validation.
